Taming Technology for Sustainable Education

Abstract

The advent of technology has caused an IT-spurt (information technology) in Education and research. Initially it was opening plethora of opportunities in enhancing activities for teaching, learning and research, and during the pandemic, it became a necessity to support the delivery of education for all. And today, it has metamorphosed into a hungry engine that propagates in many ways that can do work so fast, provide information in abundance and perform activities which could only be imagined a few years ago.  This is possible through numerous applications for teaching, learning and research and the most talked about is ChatGPT which is now in its 4.0 version. ChaptGPT and other applications are seen to be able to replace teachers and make writing not original anymore. This has shaken the core of education. This sharing proposes how instead of being overwhelmed or maybe even threatened by technology, we are going to tame it by embracing its applications into our traditional practices. Considering the audience who comprises of teachers cum researchers, this sharing highlights on the teaching and learning activities and research process. The focus is keeping the traditional activities and embracing technology, thus for the former, this sharing looks at Gagne’s 9 events of instruction.  While for the latter, it highlights Creswell’s six (6) steps in research.  Each event and each step are discussed by attaching at least one application to it.  This is to keep abreast of technological developments.  In conclusion, this sharing stresses on the importance of keeping our traditional practices alive yet embracing technology in ensuring sustainable education.
