Abstract

This study examines affordance in identifying entrances to traditional markets, using Cihapit Market, Bandung as a case study. The research focuses on three public entrances with different physical conditions and spatial or environmental elements. These conditions generate variations of affordance that shape corridor activities and the spatial character of each entrance. The analysis shows that among the variables forming public entrance spaces, cognitive affordance is the most dominant and relevant aspect in supporting the primary function of traditional market entrances, as it provides clear and easily understandable information for visitors. Meanwhile, physical affordance, sensory affordance, and functional affordance are present in various forms but have not optimally supported the role of entrances as transitional spaces leading into the market area. This study recommends further research using questionnaire methods to analyze visitors’ perceptions of the quality and function of traditional market entrances. The findings are expected to serve as a basis for policy formulation and design solutions for traditional market entrances that are contextual, informative, and aligned with the cultural characteristics of each traditional market.
