Abstract

The philosophy of Memayu Hayuning Bawana is a traditional Javanese teaching that emphasizes the importance of harmony in human life, encompassing relationships between humans and nature, fellow human beings, and the self. The application of this philosophy in interior design aims to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also meaningful, connecting occupants with profound cultural values. This study analyzes the implementation of the Memayu Hayuning Bawana philosophy in the interior design of Grand Tjokro Restaurant Bandung, which integrates traditional Javanese elements with modern design approaches. The main focus of the research lies in the selection of materials, ornamental motifs, and spatial zoning arrangements that reflect a balance between humans, nature, and social relationships. Materials such as wood, stone, and the Kawung batik motif are employed to create an atmosphere that is comfortable, harmonious, and spiritually resonant. In addition, the restaurant’s spatial layout is organized according to levels of privacy and sacredness, in accordance with Javanese philosophical principles. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through a literature review on the philosophy of Memayu Hayuning Bawana, direct observation, and visual documentation. The findings indicate that the application of this design concept not only results in a physically comfortable space but also conveys cultural messages that can be experienced by visitors. This study concludes that the integration of Javanese cultural values into modern interior design can produce spaces that are functional, aesthetic, and meaningful, thereby enriching the visitor experience while introducing cultural values to contemporary generations.
