THE PRACTICALITY OF THE VANDA GENUS ENCYCLOPEDIA FROM THE SULTAN ADAM GRAND FOREST PARK COLLECTION IN TRAINING STUDENTS’ CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Suryani et al. (2020) found that university students’ critical thinking skills were low, with a percentage of 40.68%, as indicated by students’ inability to design problem-solving strategies. A similar study by Kirana and Kusairi (2019) also reported comparable results, with a percentage of 47.06%. These conditions indicate the importance of developing learning resources that support the improvement of critical thinking skills, one of which is an encyclopedia as an alternative teaching material. The development of learning resources is carried out gradually and systematically to produce efficient learning tools. According to Masrurat et al. (2023), this process can follow Tessmer’s formative evaluation model. An encyclopedia is a book-based learning resource that can be developed. It is a collection of information arranged alphabetically or according to a particular field of science, accompanied by text and images to make it more appealing. Encyclopedias also support the development of students’ thinking and are considered important in the learning process (Hernawati et al., 2018, as cited in Kundariati et al., 2020). This study employed an Educational Design Research approach with the aim of improving university students’ critical thinking skills. Zaini (2019) explains that EDR is a method for evaluating learners’ critical thinking skills through several stages, such as problem-solving, formulating hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions. In this study, an existing encyclopedia will be further developed to make it more effective as a learning medium for training university students’ critical thinking skills. Based on this background, the researchers were interested in conducting a study entitled “Development of a Vanda Genus Encyclopedia Book from the Sultan Adam Grand Forest Park Collection to Train University Students’ Critical Thinking Skills.”
