Students’ learning interest plays an important role in classroom engagement and participation. This study explores how active learning is implemented and how it contributes to the development of students’ learning interest in Grade 4 at SD Negeri 011 Bangun Purba, Indonesia. A qualitative case study design was employed. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with one teacher and three students, and learning documents. The data were analyzed thematically with the assistance of NVivo 12. The findings show that active learning was implemented through three interrelated practices: creating participatory learning, providing varied learning activities and media, and developing two-way interactions that encouraged students to ask questions, respond, discuss, and receive feedback. Students perceived these practices as enjoyable and meaningful learning experiences that facilitated their understanding of learning materials and increased their confidence to participate. The implementation was supported by teachers’ varied instructional strategies and students’ enthusiasm and cooperation, while non-conducive classroom conditions and differences in learning abilities presented challenges. Overall, active learning contributed to the development of students’ learning interest through increased enthusiasm, engagement, and willingness to understand learning materials.
