Abstract

This study investigates the evolution of reading culture in the digital age via the use of Wattpad by Generation Z. Technological improvements have catalysed a transition in public reading culture from print media to digital media, which is more pragmatic, adaptable, and participatory. This research seeks to examine the utilisation of Wattpad as a digital reading platform by Generation Z and to comprehend the evolution of their reading culture in the digital age. The research utilises a qualitative methodology with a descriptive framework. The methods of data collecting comprised observation, interviews, and documentation. The participants in this study were students from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra who utilise Wattpad as a digital reading platform. Data analysis was performed via data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion formulation. The findings demonstrate that Wattpad has become a fundamental component of Generation Z's daily reading habits due to its practicality, accessibility, flexibility, and diverse range of genres that align with users' preferences. The reading experience on Wattpad is seen as more participatory than that of actual books, owing to features like comments, voting, and user engagement. Furthermore, the utilisation of Wattpad has shaped the informants' reading practices to be more habitual, yet predominantly centred on light and entertaining literature. The evolution of Generation Z's reading culture in the digital age is manifest in the transition of reading mediums, the adoption of more adaptable reading habits, and the enhancement of reading experiences that have become increasingly interactive and integrated with digital media in daily life.
