Abstract

Concrete floor blocks, commonly known as paving blocks, are a construction material composed of hydraulic cement or a similar binder, aggregate, and water, with or without the addition of other materials that do not reduce their quality. This study aims to analyze the effect of using High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) plastic waste as alternative additives in paving block production on their compressive strength. A quantitative research method was used, involving laboratory testing of specimens with five different mixture variations. The specimens were prepared in 5 × 5 × 5 cm cubes, consisting of sand and varying percentages of HDPE and LDPE plastic waste. Compressive strength testing was conducted after 28 days of curing to ensure that the specimens had achieved adequate strength. The test results showed that the addition of plastic waste to the paving block mixture did not increase the average compressive strength compared to the control specimen, which had a compressive strength of 11.09 MPa. The optimum compressive strength obtained in this study was 8.00 MPa, achieved with a composition of 42% plastic waste and 58% sand. Statistical hypothesis testing using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) shows that F count > F table, which indicates a significant effect of HDPE and LDPE plastic waste on the compressive strength of paving blocks. Therefore, it can be concluded that the addition of HDPE and LDPE plastic waste has an effect on the compressive strength of paving blocks.
