TPACK Based: A Need Analysis for ELT Materials Development

Abstract

Maintaining current levels of knowledge necessitates putting learning into daily life. Currently, the development of technology and information has been very rapid, so it is possible to carry out technology-based learning. The term "TPACK" refers to the integration of conceptual frameworks related to technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge. The aim of this study was to determine if one of Kalimantan Barat schools was prepared to use TPACK in its teaching methodology. Descriptive analysis is the research method that is implemented. The techniques used to collect the data are observation of the school's infrastructure and amenities, interviews with a number of students and one of the English teachers, and student questionnaire responses. The findings revealed that the school and teachers were not prepared to include TPACK in learning and teaching activities. Even though the students were prepared enough for TPACK-based teaching and learning, it could be difficult because the school and teachers were not prepared. The observation reveals a scarcity of learning resources. The interview findings revealed that there are impediments to the use of TPACK in teaching and learning activities, such as a lack of technological skills, difficulty adapting to existing technology, and student indiscipline while utilizing technology in learning activities. Based on the study's findings, it is possible to conclude that certain demands must still be satisfied in order to accomplish TPACK-based learning.

Author Biographies

Ravena Devi, Universitas Tanjungpura, Pontianak, Indonesia

Ravena Devi was born in Putussibau, 2000. From 2007 to 2012, Ravena attended SDN 1 Suhaid for her initial education. From 2013 to 2015, she pursued her education at SMPN 1 Suhaid. Ravena became interested in English when she began taking studies in junior high school. Having attended SMAN 1 Semitau, she decided to study in English Language Education at Universitas Tanjungpura in 2018 since her love for the language had grown so much and she wanted to become an English teacher.

Ikhsanudin Ikhsanudin, Universitas Tanjungpura, Pontianak, Indonesia

Ikhsanudin is an associate professor in English language teaching at Universitas Tanjungpura (Pontianak-Indonesia). His research interests include teacher professional development, language teaching materials, and teaching methodology. Now, he is developing a model of teaching materials, entitled: “COMAUST Model of Intensive English Listening Materials for Academic Purpose” that will be published soon by Untan Press. Besides teaching in undergraduate and graduate programs in his university, he also serves as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of English Language Teaching Innovations and Materials (Jeltim), the founding president of English Language Teaching Materials (ELTeaM) association, and the Kalimantan Barat Regional Coordinator of the Association for the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia (TEFLIN). Ikhsan has talked in more than thirty educational conferences. He has presented as an invited and plenary speakers in various cities in Indonesia and overseas, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, India, USA, UK, and Germany.
