Hello English App for Online Learning during the Pandemic: Does it Enhance the Students’ English Vocabulary Development?

Abstract

The Covid-19 Pandemic made it almost impossible for the students learn face-to-face. The demand of technology for learning online is needed in such situation. The writers chose Hello English App to find out the enhancement of the app on students’ English vocabulary development and the perceptions at the seven-grade level of private junior high school in Indonesia in academic year 2020/2021. This quantitative study with quasi-experimental design involving seventh-grade students. The researcher provided a multiple-choice test consisting of 30 students in experimental and control class respectively through pre-test, treatment and post-test. The researcher employed statistical calculation of the t-test formula with 5% significance level using SPSS 22 based on the score collected from the students’ pre-test and post-test results. It was found out that, the mean score of a post-test in the experimental class was significantly higher than the conventional class. The result of t-test indicated that Hello English has a significance impact on the development of students’ English words. Meanwhile, the questionnaire results showed that most students agreed (>80%) that the Hello English App can assist them in English learning, particularly English words They felt satisfied and enjoyed the learning process when they employed the Hello English App to acquire English words as well. As a conclusion, the app is applicable in mastering students’ English words. It is recommended for learners and teachers as an alternative way during the Pandemic. The result from this research is essential. However, limited time during treatment and participants could not make the findings generalized.

Author Biographies

Imam Sudarmaji, Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf Tangerang, Tangerang, Indonesia

Imam Sudarmaji. He was born in Tangerang on September 20th, 1989. He is a “bocah kampung” who lives in Desa Rancagong, Kecamatan Legok, Kabupaten Tangerang. He graduated from English Language Education Department of Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf (UNIS) Tangerang in 2011. Then in 2015, he completed his Master's Degree of English Language Education at Indraprasta University Jakarta. In 2017 he got a doctoral scholarship and is currently a doctoral candidate in the field of applied linguistics at the State University of Jakarta. Now he is a lecturer at Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf  (UNS) Tangerang. In 2017-2019, he was the Head of English Language Education Department of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf (UNIS) Tangerang. Then, in 2019-2021, he was the Vice Dean of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of UNIS. Currently, he is the secretary at SPI (Satuan Pengawas Internal) UNIS.

Lastry Forsia, Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf, Tangerang, Indonesia

Lastry Forsia. She was born in Majalengka of Indonesia in 1992. Mrs Lastry has completed her bachelor’s degree in English Department of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Islamic University of Syekh Yusuf in 2014. She is also a Master of English Education from Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka University in 2017. Currently, she is working as chair of English department in UNIS.

Indah Permata Sari Siregar, Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf, Tangerang, Indonesia

Indah Permata Sari Siregar. She was born in Tangerang province of Banten in 1999. She graduated from English Language Education Department of Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf (UNIS) Tangerang in 2021. Now, she is an English teacher at SD Negeri Kedaung Wetan 2. She was a chairwoman at AEES ( Association of English Education Students) organization in 2019-2020. A little experience made her aware of the value of hard work and made her more enthusiastic about doing positive things.

Danu Yusuf, Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf, Tangerang, Indonesia

Danu Yusuf. He was born in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1998. He has graduated from English language and education in Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf in 2021. He has been teaching English as a foreign language for more than 4 years. The writer also wrote an English-Indonesian dictionary which was published in 2021. Moreover, the writer has published one research paper related to English language teaching. In addition, he also has several books that are in progress of being composed.
