This study aims to map the development and characteristics of research on special libraries using a bibliometric approach. The research data were obtained from 91 articles indexed in the Scopus database covering the period 2020–2024. The analysis was conducted using Biblioshiny and VOSviewer to examine annual publication trends, author productivity based on Lotka’s Law, citation patterns, country contributions, as well as author collaboration and keyword co-occurrence networks. The results indicate that publications on special libraries fluctuated over time, with the highest output recorded in 2021. The analysis of author productivity reveals that most authors contributed only one article, which is consistent with the principle of Lotka’s Law, although the empirical distribution does not fully conform to the theoretical model. The average number of citations per year shows an increasing trend in recent years, indicating growing academic interest in special library research. Publication output is dominated by several countries, particularly India, the United States, and Nigeria, while other countries demonstrate relatively lower contributions. Visualization of author collaboration networks reveals an integrated structure dominated by a single main cluster, reflecting sustained collaborative patterns. This study contributes to library and information science by providing a focused bibliometric mapping of special library research, a field that remains relatively underexplored compared to public and academic libraries. The findings have important implications for researchers in identifying research trends and gaps, as well as for special library practitioners in developing services, collections, and collaboration strategies aligned with global research directions
