The Choreographic Form of the Katrili Dance and Its Existence in Minahasa presents the structure or construct of the Katrili dance and illustrates its role and presence as a New Creative Dance in Minahasa. The purpose of this study is to document Indonesian artistic and cultural works. Through the existence of this choreographic form, the Minahasan community—especially schoolchildren and art students—can more easily perform the basic movements of regional dances found across Indonesia, and be encouraged to learn about and appreciate Indonesian culture as their own. This study is a qualitative inquiry using an Ethno-Art approach, which focuses on the concepts of role and existence. It aims to describe the choreographic structure of the dance by understanding cultural phenomena that reflect the awareness of the Minahasan people in relation to the role and presence of the Katrili dance as a New Creative Dance within Minahasan society. This approach allows the study to explore and answer two central research questions. Choreographically, the formulation outlines the following aspects: the basic movement patterns of the Katrili dance; the floor patterns or formations; the music used in the performance; and the costumes and makeup worn by the dancers. The choreography of the Katrili dance is presented as a group performance in pairs, using basic movements derived from modern social dances, particularly those with waltz rhythm and the “Caca” rhythm. This dance is typically performed by an odd number of male and female dancers, led by one individual who, in Minahasan tradition, is referred to as the "catapult" (or dance leader). The Katrili dance includes two types of steps: the Waltz (in 3/4 time) and the Gallop step (in 2/4 time), with commands delivered by the dance leader in French. The movement vocabulary employed is simple, serving as a symbolic representation of mutual respect. The existence of the Katrili dance plays a significant role in Minahasan society, functioning as a youth social dance, a cultural performance, and a symbol of cultural acculturation. As a social dance among youth, it represents the blending of local Minahasan traditions with European cultures, particularly Spanish and Portuguese. This dance is frequently performed at various social and cultural events, as well as at state inaugurations, formal ceremonies, and competitions. The Katrili dance holds deep meaning, symbolizing the loyalty and openness of the Minahasan people in welcoming guests. Philosophically, it represents mutual respect and conveys an ethical message within Indonesian society about maintaining unity and a sense of togetherness.
