The Six Characteristics of Andragogy and Future Research Directions in EFL: A Literature Review

Abstract

The way in which adults learn is distinctive to how children learn, hence Andragogy differs from Pedagogy and so do the implications. Although several studies have attempted to discuss the andragogy and its principles, only few studies investigate its implementation and the practical guidance on how to employ each characteristic in the teaching and learning process. To fill this void, this paper reviews the concept of andragogy and highlights its six characteristics: self-concept, experiences, readiness to learn, motivation, need to know, and problem-centred learning. Employing a narrative review of 18 journal articles from reputable international journals, the study’s findings suggest that the six characteristics/principles of andragogy are applicable in designing teaching and learning materials, teaching activities, and assignments enacted by teachers. Future research is encouraged to delve into the practice of the six characteristics of andragogy in the teaching of English as a foreign language. The differences between adults and children learning and directions for further research in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) is also discussed at the end of study.

    Diana Purwati is a lecturer and the chief of Language Development Center, STKIP Yapis Dompu, NTB, Indonesia. She obtained her Master of Education TESOL at The University of South Australia. She was an awardee of Australia Awards Scholarship. Diana’s research interests are on Language and Culture, EFL/ESL, Language and Identity, Translanguaging, and Technology in Education.  Diana has published some research papers and participated in various national and international conferences.

    Ainol Mardhiah is a lecturer in the English department of STKIP Bumi Persada, Lhokseumawe, Indonesia. She earned her Master’s degree in TESOL from Flinders University, Australia. Her research interests are teaching and learning, Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL), the use of various technological tools and applications in EFL classrooms.

    Enung Nurhasanah is a senior lecturer at STKIP Yapis Dompu, NTB, Indonesia.  She is also the 2nd Chief Representative of STKIP Yapis Dompu.  She pursued her master degree at The University of Islamic Indonesia.  Enung’s research interests are on Islamic Studies and Teaching Methodologies.

    Ramli is a lecturer and the head of English Program and also Head of Office of International Affairs. He has published some papers and collaborated with lecturers and students in- and off-campus. Ramli, moreover, has participated in several seminars, both local and national. As a Head of Office of international Affairs, he has been invited to be the lecturer of International Expert lecturers at PICOMS international University College. Ramli is interested in doing the research under the scope of TEFL, Discourse and Pragmatics Analysis.
