Abstract

Fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) are economically important pests that reduce the quality and marketability of tropical fruits. This study compared trap-based abundance and assemblage structure in a lemon orchard and a papaya orchard in Tanjung Baru Village, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra, Indonesia, from May to July 2025. The same 20 fruiting plants in each orchard were sampled weekly for eight weeks using methyl eugenol traps, yellow sticky traps, and sweep nets. Catches were summarized by species, and Shannon–Wiener diversity (H′), Simpson dominance (D), and Pielou evenness (E) indices were calculated using R. The lemon orchard yielded 4,744 individuals representing four species, whereas the papaya orchard yielded 3,194 individuals representing three species. Bactrocera dorsalis dominated both orchards, with 2,782 individuals in lemon and 3,135 in papaya. The lemon orchard had higher diversity (H′ = 0.843) and evenness (E = 0.608), but lower dominance (D = 0.482), than the papaya orchard (H′ = 0.100; E = 0.091; D = 0.964). Methyl eugenol traps yielded the largest cumulative catches. Observed differences should be interpreted descriptively because one orchard represented each crop type. These findings provide baseline information for orchard-level monitoring but represent trap-based patterns rather than complete communities or causal crop effects.
